Davide Pettenella, University of Padova - Provincial energy plan of the Provincia Autonoma di Trento, 2013-2020 - Servizio Foreste Provincia Autonoma di Trento, referente dott. Marcello Scutari - AA.VV., IPCC Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use - web site treedom.net, with an environmental calculator edited by IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel On Climate Change) Total CO2 kg emitted for transfers: 2697 (65%) Total CO2 kg emitted for accommodation: 233 (6%) Total CO2 kg emitted for food: 1204 (29%) Total for the whole group of 7 people: about4134 CO2 kilograms (rounded to 4 tonnes) Total water consumption from food consumed and showers taken (by the whole group): about 502943 litres of water, equivalent to 3353 bath tubs, that put in a row would cover a distance of 6 km! This amount of water could be used to water about 2012square meters of vegetable garden for a whole year (250 l/sqm/year), that in our area could give nourishment to 20 families (100sqm/family). Alternatively, this amount of water could quench a dairy cow's thirst for 2515 days (about 200 l/day). How can we balance these emissions? Estimating that it takes about 100 trees to absorb one tonne of CO2 in a year, the emissions from the class trip 6 to Germany can be balanced by 413 trees. These trees correspond to approximately 3717square metres of forest (corresponding to 0.44 football fields) which can be enhanced as follows: - you can support the Otonga project in Ecuador with a donation of ?557.55 (?0.15 each sqm) to buy a corresponding area of forest; - you can set aside time for an environmental protection activity in your school, to be agreed with your class teachers; - you can carry out an activity, planned with your family or firends, on environmental sustainability. Remember to communicate this to your class teachers. This calculator was created by Alessandro Vallin (alessandro.vallin@scuole.provincia.tn.it - Rovereto)
